CORTLAND A 20-year-old Cortland woman accused of driving drunk with a small child in the vehicle is free on $3,000 bond following her first appearance in Central District Court Friday.
Sarah Latimer of Niles Cortland Road N.E. faces charges of child endangering, underage drinking, operating a vehicle while impaired and not having a proper child restraint. She is due back in court Oct. 1.
Bazetta police were called to Patriot Motors on McCleary Jacoby Road around 11:50 a.m. Wednesday after receiving reports that there was a possible intoxicated driver with a small child in the vehicle, according to a police report.
A witness told police that a few minutes earlier, he was driving north on state Route 5 when a vehicle nearly struck the rear of his vehicle several times and ran him off the road once, the report states.
The witness told police that the other vehicle attempted to turn around in the parking lot of the car dealership before stopping on the edge of the road. He told police he followed the vehicle, confronted the driver, placed the vehicle in park and removed the keys, ''fearing for the child's safety,'' according to the report.
Police said when they approached the car, the driver's speech was lethargic. They said they smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle and saw a 2-year-old girl in a booster seat on the rear passenger side.
The driver did not pass field sobriety tests and on a breath test, registered 0.27, according to police. The legal driving limit in Ohio is 0.08.
The incident was reported to the Trumbull County Children Services Board, police said.
