Fri., 11:26 pm: Area artists get put to a vote for Mahoningside mural project

COMING SATURDAY: The Trumbull Art Gallery was packed this evening as people streamed in and out of the North Park Street location to cast votes for what will grace a wall at the former Mahoningside Power Plant in Warren.

In association with the TAG, the Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership put out the call for area artist to offer renditions of what murals they could paint onto the 11-foot-tall-by-100-foot-wide wall at the now-vacant lot at Summit and Mahoning avenues.

The submissions covered a broad spectrum, from a bright and colorful mural of Warren's proud high school athletic history to a creation called "The Sleeping Giant," which depicted a slumbering fairy tail-eqsue giant which stretched the length of the wall.

"I just wanted to try and come up with something whimsical," Thomas Morgan, the artist behind The Sleeping Giant, said. "I just thought that the green space in front of the wall looked very tranquil, and that something like (the sleeping giant) might make for a good fit with the area."

TNP's Mikenna McClurg said that submissions were slow initially, but a last-second call to the local artistic community resulted in nearly 30 possibilities from which residents could choose.
