WARREN - Attorney William P. McLain Sr. of Warren entered peacefully into eternal rest on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at his residence. He was 81.
William was born on Nov. 28, 1932, in Warren, the son of the late Francis A. and Jane Murphy McLain, and was a lifetime resident of the town he loved so well.
He was a 1951 graduate of St. Mary's High School in Warren and a "Double Domer" graduate of the University of Notre Dame. He received his BA degree in 1955 and his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1958, and then served as law clerk for U.S. Federal Judge Frank J. Battisti.
William was a practicing attorney in Warren and was the Warren City law director from 1963 to 1992.
A devout catholic, William was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where he was a founding member of the parish council.
He was an avid reader and supporter of the Irish Heritage Society. He also was a member of the Warren Stamp Club and enjoyed playing tennis and gardening in his spare time. William enjoyed Irish music and travels to the Galway-Mayo border.
On Feb. 12, 1966, William was united into marriage with the former Ann M. Garmy and had shared 48 years together.
Memories of William will be cherished by those he leaves behind, his loving wife, Ann M. McLain; sons William Patrick McLain Jr. of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Brian F. McLain of Santa Fe, N.M.; daughters, Bridget A. McLain of Hatteras, N.C., and Megan J. McLain of Philadelphia; cousin, attorney David C. McLain of Warren; and many Murphy and Davern cousins.
William was preceded in death by his cousin, Judge David F. McLain; and grandparents, Margaret Kane and Martin McLain, and Bridget Disken Davern and John Walsh Murphy of Inis an Ghaill, Ireland.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be noon Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Warren, where the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the service. The Rev. Thomas McCarthy will be the celebrant.
Burial will follow in All Souls Cemetery in Cortland.
