COMMEMORATION TO HONOR GENERAL: The McKinley Memorial Library and the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of Gen. James "Birdseye" McPherson at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the library. Guest speaker Stephen Papalas, local Civil War historian, will speak about the Battle of Atlanta and its connection to Niles. Those attending are asked to bring a lawn chair. During the war, he was attached to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's staff for a time, fought at Shiloh and Vicksburg, and lost his life at the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864. The commemoration will be held at the General McPherson Statue on the south lawn of the memorial grounds across from the post office. A wreath will be placed on the statue.
