CORTLAND - James A. Denman, 87, of Cortland, died at 8:02 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren.
He was born on March 21, 1927, in Johnston, the son of the late Davis E. and Bertha Ida Kearns Denman.
Jim was self-employed, the owner / operator of Denman Inc. in Mecca, a general construction company, from 1952 until November 1995.
He was a vegetable gardener to say the least. His garden was enormous and he enjoyed canning.
He and his wife attended Johnston Federated Church.
Jim was also an honorably discharged U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, the former Betty Pahon, whom he married on May 19, 1951; his children, Larry (Denise) Denman of Warren, William A. (Maryanne) Denman of Cortland, Diane (Tom) Horner of Cortland, and Denise (Jim Davis) Reynolds of Cortland; seven grandchildren, Julie (Jeremy) Welker, Jennifer Montgomery, Matthew Denman, Mary Catherine (Phil) Mazi, Zach Horner, Michael Denman and Nathan Montgomery; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Louise DiDay of Champion.
Other than his parents, James was preceded in death by his brother, Earl Denman.
Per James' wishes, there will not be any services or calling hours and cremation will take place. Burial of his cremated remains will take place during a very private immediate family burial in Johnston Township Cemetery.
