WARREN - Local auto dealers saw an 11 percent increase in new car sales during June, compared to the same month last year, according to statistics released Tuesday.
The Auto Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio reported new-car buyers in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties purchased 2,687 new cars last month, compared to 2,428 they purchased in June 2013.
Sweeney Chevrolet sold the most new cars, 182, for a 30 percent increase over the 140 sold in June 2013. Second-highest local sales were at Taylor Kia in Boardman, at 172, followed by Greenwood Chevrolet in Austintown, which sold 152. Stadium GM Superstore in Salem sold 139 and Sweeney Buick GMC sold 137, to round out the top five local dealers.
In Trumbull, County Diane Sauer reclaimed the county's top-selling spot, moving 92 new cars off the lot, up 14 percent from this time last year. Sims Buick GMC Nissan sold 82, and Klaben Ford Lincoln of Warren sold 74.
Year-to-date, sales are up about 7 percent overall.
Used-car sales also increased nearly 10 percent during June in the tri-county area, to 3,507 from 3,200 in June 2013.
Top used-car sales in the three counties were at Taylor Kia, with 113, up 17 percent from used car sales in 2013. Second was Fairway Ford with 80 used car sales and Stadium GM Superstore with 76.
Sauer also led used-car sales in Trumbull County with 62. Klaben Ford Lincoln of Warren was second with 59 and Sims Buick GMC Nissan had the third highest used car sales with 55.
Used-car sales saw a slight uptick for the first half of the year, to 22,173 over 21,936 sold in the first half of 2013.
The five top-selling new cars in the three counties were made by General Motors, with the locally built Chevrolet Cruze leading the way. The small car saw a 46 percent increase in local sales in June, to 240 from 164 last June.
Cruze outpaced Equinox, the area's second-best selling new car, nearly 2 to 1. A total of 127 Chevy Equinoxes were sold in June.
Chevrolet's Silverado pickup truck was the area's third-best seller, at 103; followed by new Chevy Malibus, at 96, and GMC Terrain, at 92.
