As I read newspaper articles and Letters to the Editor, I sometimes wonder what controls people. What rules in their lives?
I recently read an analogy that suggests that an individual is controlled by the stomach, head or chest. Those ruled by the stomach pursue comfort, advancement, riches and sex. They don't necessarily assert themselves because they do whatever they want.
Those ruled by the head live by the self-improvement plan. They read self-help books and create life plans to avoid distracting emotions. They want order in and for their lives, but they avoid their deepest passions to pursue this order.
A person controlled by his chest allows him/herself to feel deeply about the world and is moved in the right direction.
How many Americans are controlled by the chest today? Do Americans today lack these deep wells of emotional energy? Have been made barren and empty by today's world? Do Americans need change in their quality of life: a life directed by the word of God and empowered by the spirit of God?
I think so.
Instead of letting today's values shape our thinking, our thinking needs to be molded by the will of God. The Holy Spirit is the key to real change in life. And how can the Holy Spirit help Americans if they do not seek Him? And should we seek and find Him, how do we help America if we all remain private about our relationship with God as one lady recently suggested in her letter?
Luke 14:26 states rather roughly. ''He cannot be my disciple.'' This verse teaches us that the only men and women our Lord will use in His building enterprise are those who love Him personally, passionately and with great devotion - those who have a love for Him that goes far beyond any of our closest relationships on earth.
Entrust yourself America to God's hands. Faith is not some weak and pitiful emotion, but is strong and vigorous confidence built on the fact that God is holy love. If anything is a mystery to you and is coming between you and God, never look for the explanation in your mind, but look for it in your spirit, your true inner nature - That is where the problem is. It is not the baptism of the Holy Spirit that changes people, but the power of the ascended Christ coming into your lives through the Holy Spirit. America can no longer keep saying, ''Lord, I will follow you, but . . . You fill in the blank. What is your but?
This what the Lord says: "The children I raised and cared for have rebelled against me. My people don't recognize My care for them". Do you believe this to be true?
If yes, maybe we can change and if we change maybe we will stop asking for ''God Bless America.'' He has! Instead it can be ''Americans Bless God.''
