I would like to respond to the editorial written regarding physician assistants.
I am currently a PA student in the state of Ohio, and I am extremely disappointed to have read such a lack of research.
PAs in Ohio have been able to prescribe medications since 2006, and recent legislation has allowed us to prescribe Schedule II drugs. Schools in Ohio require a Bachelor's degree to enter a PA program, and all PA programs are Master's degrees.
We are under a physician's supervision, but we do not need a doctor to ''handle the task'' of writing prescriptions. Physician assistant students go through 27 months of condensed medical school in order to perform most tasks that physicians do, including the writing of prescriptions.
