Ongoing reports by the Tribune Chronicle illustrate how the proliferation of so-called massage parlors continues to be a blight on Trumbull County. Even a series of law enforcement raids in 2012 was not enough to solve the problem.
That's why I worked extensively with State Rep. Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo) to pass human trafficking legislation that will crack down on massage parlors that engage in prostitution and other illegal activity.
I proposed two provisions that strengthened House Bill 130. The first makes it illegal to advertise for massage services with the explicit or implicit promise or suggestion of sexual activity. The second provision empowers local communities by giving them the flexibility to enact tougher rules when necessary.
I'm pleased that HB 130 passed both chambers of the Ohio General Assembly with unanimous bipartisan support. This legislation will help improve our community and our state by giving law enforcement more tools to protect women.
