CHAMPION - The Trumbull Career and Technical Center is among 15 high schools nationwide to be presented the High Schools That Work Platinum High Achievement Award for the staff and students meeting various standards and assessments.
The award is scheduled for presentation in July at the HSTW Summer Staff Development Conference at the Opryland Resort and Convention in Nashville.
Mary Flint, TCTC director, said the platinum award is the highest any school can receive and is given when a school that had 85 percent or more of students meet college and career readiness goals completed recommended curriculum and concentration, achieved high implementation status, and have a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher.
Flint said the school is honored to receive the designation.
"It is quite an honor to receive this," she said.
Superintendent Jason Gray said he is very proud of the staff and students and the home schools.
"Educational success is a collaboration overall. Trumbull County schools as a whole are excellent and filled with hardworking dedicated professionals. Together our local schools and TCTC are providing 21st century educational experiences that connect students for college and career readiness," Gray said.
Gray said investing in educating youth yields great returns as we know and educated workforce is the key to a great community and stable economy.
Flint said in 2013 the TCTC received the "Outstanding Career Center" award.
Flint said the award is a cumulative effort of all at the TCTC.
"A lot of the assessments show our students ready for college and careers," Flint said.
Gene Bottoms, senior vice president with HSTW state coordinator, said in the letter to TCTC "It is not a small feat to deeply implement the HSTW model and improve student achievement. Doing so requires a variety of changes in school and classroom practices and expectations. We hope you continue to make progress by building a culture of high expectations in which all groups of students excel."
Teachers Michelle Plakosh and Rachel Gensburg, site coordinators for HSTW program, said the HSTW initiative helps guide the professional development of the staff both at the regional and state levels in order to help enhance and improve academics and career-tech goals.
Plakosh said there are leadership meetings of the staff which focus on health and wellness, professional development, high achievement, retention rate and data.
"Each month representatives of the different groups at he school meet with us and the administration to help in making school-wide decisions," Gensburg said.
Flint said a random sampling of 60 seniors is done for the assessment asking them about their high school experience as well as a test on math, language arts and science.
"The students are excited and take pride in taking the test and survey," Plakosh said.
