WARREN - Chevy Cruze outpaced sales of any other new car at local dealers in May, with buyers taking delivery on 219 small sedans.
That number was up 76 from May 2013, according to statistics released Tuesday by the North East Ohio Auto Dealers Association.
Four fewer Chevrolet Malibus were sold in May than in May 2013, but the 133 was still enough to hold second place for local dealer sales. Chevy Equinox ranked third with 121; Chevy Silverado pickup truck was fourth at 109; and Ford F150 pickup rounded out the top five in new car sales with 86.
Sales of the Lordstown-built Chevy Cruze are up by 396 on the year to 1,076 from 680 this time last year in the three-county area that includes Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana.
Greenwood Chevy in Austintown retained its top-selling position for the month by moving 196 cars off its lot, an increase of 46 from May 2013. Bob and Chuck Eddy Chrysler Dodge Jeep, also in Austintown, ranked second-highest for sales in the tri-county market, with 188 new vehicle sales last month. Sweeney Chevrolet ranked third with 169; Taylor Kia and Stadium GM Superstore tied for fourth with 126 each.
All five of the top-selling dealerships are located in Mahoning County.
Top sellers for new vehicles in Trumbull County were Greenwood Chevrolet of Hubbard, which sold 67 new vehicles in May; Diane Sauer Chevrolet in Warren, which sold 63 new vehicles; and Cole Valley Chevrolet, which sold 59.
Total new cars sold in May in the three counties was 2,618, up 271 compared to May 2013. For the year, sales hit 12,112, also up 695 from last year at this time.
Used car sales also increased in May, with top sales coming at Greenwood Chevrolet in Austintown; Taylor Kia in Boardman; and Sweeney Chevrolet in Boardman.
Diane Sauer sold 55 used cars, the highest of any Trumbull County dealership. Behind Sauer was Greenwood Chevrolet of Hubbard; and Klaben Ford Lincoln of Warren.
