New this week on DVD / Blu-ray:
"Lone Survivor" - Based on the true story of "Operation Red Wings," a 2005 mission during the Iraq-Afghanistan war, a Navy SEAL team is sent to kill a Taliban leader. Things go horribly wrong, and the title of the movie essentially gives away the outcome.
The movie has a clear agenda in arguing how both the rules of engagement and military protocols put forces in danger. There are a couple moments that veer too far toward jingoism and war movie cliches, but they are relatively few. Instead, writer-director Peter Berg keeps the focus on the men whose lives are affected by those policies. Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster and Emile Hirsch star in the tense and gripping film.
All versions include two featurettes, "Bringing the Story to Light" and "The Fallen Heroes of Operation Red Wings." The Blu-ray comes with four additional featurettes - "Will of the Warrior," "Recreating the Firefight," "Learning the Basics" and "The Pashtun Code of Life." (Universal Studios Home Entertainment, $29.98 DVD, $34.98 Blu-ray)
"RoboCop" - The 1980s action film gets remade with Joel Kinnaman playing the cop who, after being injured in the line of duty, is transformed into a half-man, half-robot law-enforcement machine by OmniCorp, a multinational conglomerate. Samuel L. Jackson, Douglas Urbanski, Abbie Cornish, Jay Baruchel, and Michael Keaton costar.
Extras include deleted scenes and the three-part featurette "RoboCop: Engineered for the 21st Century." (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, $29.98 DVD, $39.99 Blu-ray)
"Son of God" - Footage from the History Channel's miniseries "The Bible" is recut (with additional footage) to focus on the life of Jesus. Extras include the featurette "Son of God: Reborn." (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, $29.98 DVD, $39.99 Blu-ray)
"In the Blood" - Gina Carano stars as a woman whose husband (Cam Gigandet) disappears on their Caribbean honeymoon, and she goes in search of the people she believes are responsible in an action film costarring Luis Guzman, Treat Williams, Stephen Lang and Danny Trejo.
The disc includes a behind-the-scenes featurette. (Anchor Bay, $24.98 DVD, $30.99 Blu-ray)
"The Motel Life" - Two brothers (Emile Hirsch, Stephen Dorff) flee town when one is involved in a hit-and-run accident, but avoiding the law doesn't mean they avoid their problems. Dakota Fanning and Kris Kristofferson costar. Extras include a making-of featurette and an illustration gallery. (Cinedigm, $17.97 DVD, $19.97 Blu-ray)
"Parts Per Billion" - Three couples face relationship problems in the wake of an apocalyptic event. Josh Hartnett, Teresa Palmer, Alexis Bledel, Rosario Dawson, Penn Badgley, Gene Rowlands and Frank Langella star. (Millennium, $28.99 DVD, $29.99 Blu-ray)
"Goodbye World" - Following a cyber attack, a group of people seek shelter in a remote cabin, where they must deal with outside forces and in-fighting. Adrien Grenier, Scott Mescudi, Ben McKenzie Gaby Hoffmann and Kerry Bishe star. (Phase 4 Films, $16.99 DVD or Blu-ray)
