COLUMBUS - With 936 work zones around the state this summer, the Ohio Department of Transportation wants motorists to stay alert while driving this Memorial Day holiday.
According to ODOT records, there were 4,093 crashes in work zones in Ohio during 2013, including 1,012 injury crashes and 17 fatalities.
"The most effective way we've found to reduce work zone crashes is to work with law enforcement, and this year we have a better way to do just that: 'Ohio's Move Over Law,'" ODOT Director Jerry Wray said.
Ohio's Move Over Law is designed to protect the lives of everyone who works on or uses roadways. It requires motorists to cautiously shift over one lane, or slow down if changing lanes is not possible, when passing any vehicle with flashing lights on the side of a road.
The purpose of the law is to protect everyone who works on roads and everyone who travels on them.
While construction work is suspended over the holiday, many permanent work zone restrictions remain in place. Here is a list of notable highway construction projects in northeast Ohio that could impact Memorial Day holiday travel.
Mount Everett Road under Interstate 80 in Hubbard Township is closed through mid-October 2016 for roadway construction. The detour is U.S. Route 62 / state Route 7 to state Route 304 to Bell Wick Road. The I-80 eastbound and westbound lanes over Mount Everett Road have various lane restrictions for bridge repairs. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph through this portion of I-80.
State Route 82 between the Portage County line and state Route 534 in Braceville has various daily lane restrictions for bridge repairs and roadway resurfacing. The full project is scheduled to be completed by October.

Mayburn Corners Barclay Road over Sugar Creek between state Route 5 and Burnett East Road in Kinsman is closed through late June for a bridge replacement. The detour is Burnett East Road to state Route 5. The project is scheduled to be completed by August.
When driving through work zones, motorists should follow these safety tips:
Eliminate distractions - put down cell phones
Stay alert and give
driving your full attention
Follow all posted signs and obey flaggers
Don't tailgate or speed; most crashes in work zones are rear-end
Expect the unexpected
Beware that normal
traffic patterns may be shifted
