LAS VEGAS - William E. "Bill" Bixler, 84, originally of Warren, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2014, at St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Las Vegas.
Bill was the son of Herbert and Arta Bixler, born on April 21, 1930, in Navarre.
He was a hometown football hero in Navarre in the late 1940s.
He worked 30 years for General Electric Trumbull Lamp and traveled the country with his wife, Carole, upon his retirement. In 2003 they settled in Las Vegas, where they enjoyed the warm weather, bingo and video poker.
He could tell a story like a true historian, and never met a stranger in his life. Bill also enjoyed woodworking, cooking and lending a helping hand to family, friends and neighbors.
He is survived by his wife, Carole Shreves Bixler; and three sons, David (Carol) of Marietta, Bruce (Lori) of Warren and Scott (Irma) of Tampa, Fla. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Mandy Cunningham, Kristy Bowser, Cate Bixler, Rachel Carpenter, Philip Sorensen and Stacie Bixler; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Haley and Elise. Bill also leaves behind a brother, Duke (Cynthia) Bixler of Dover; and a sister, Thelma Eby of Canton.
He was preceded in death by both parents, and siblings Paul Bixler, Garnet Lickes, Clifford Bixler and Dorothy Wilber.
Arrangements were finalized by McDermott Funeral Home & Crematory in Las Vegas, and a private memorial service will be held in Ohio at a later date.
