YOUNGSTOWN - A northeast Ohio county is taking the final steps before a $6 million renovation of its century-old courthouse begins this summer.

An architect and structural engineer have been examining, measuring and photographing the rooftop features of the 103-year-old Mahoning County Courthouse in Youngstown.

County purchasing agent James Fortunato said the building is a jewel in the center of town.

The courthouse, with a granite exterior and a marble interior, opened March 6, 1911, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Engineers are examining the courthouse's exterior for damage to any granite or terra cotta fixtures.

A recent symposium in Columbus highlighted ways to save Ohio's historic county courthouses.
