May 9, 2014
Tribune Chronicle

HOWLAND -- An elderly man was transported by ambulance to a local hospital to be evaluated this morning after fire damaged his Brentwood Avenue home.

The man, his wheelchair-bound wife and son were nearly out of the house before fire crews arrived around 1:45 a.m.

Officials said the fire was contained quickly, but caused extensive damage to the front bedroom. There was also smoke damage throughout the house.

Howland fire Chief James Pantalone said the husband and wife each received Oxygen at the scene.

The elderly man, believed to be in his 70s, was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital.

Their names have not been released.

``But everyone is OK. We just wanted him to be evaluated at the hospital as an added precaution,'' Pantalone said.

Pantalone said a local hotel is providing lodging for the wife and son for the next few nights. The family is also receiving help from the Red Cross.

He said the cause has is under investigation.
