CHAMPION - Sheldon Allison "Spike" Owens Jr., 80, formerly of Maple Avenue in Niles, died at 2:55 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 28, 1934, in Warren, the son of Sheldon Allison and Emma Mildred Loveless Owens Sr.
A 1953 graduate of Kinsman High School, he honorably served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He retired in 1978 after working several years as the Trumbull County dog warden.
He was a member of the Holiness Gospel Mission and the Army & Navy Garrison 242. He enjoyed country music, collecting stamps and coins, and going to flea markets, but most of all, he cherished the time spent with his family and grandkids.
Sheldon is survived by five children, Gaylene Sue (Ray) Fickes of Kinston, N.C., Chris Lee (Vicki) Porter of North Bloomfield, Darla Jean Dutta of Lordstown, Shelley Rae (Robert) Teagarden of Warren, and Valerie Lynn Swiger and Larry Putnam of Niles; 12 grandchildren, Amanda Rae Bayus, Robert Alan Teagarden, Savannah Rose Teagarden, James Larkin Teagarden, Christopher Allison Lee Porter, Jeremy Keith Porter, Amanda Gowdy, Adam Lizzie, Justin Terence Swiger, Elizabeth Ann Penezich, Danielle Nichole Swiger and Amber Elizabeth Fickes; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Jane Hathaway of Austintown.
He was preceded in death by his wife, DeLores Jean Williams Owens, whom he married on April 29, 1960, and who died on Sept. 2, 2005; father, Sheldon Owens Sr.; mother, Emma Owens Della Santa; great-grandson, Elijah Coy Swiger; two brothers, Harry F. Owens and Mark Owens Sr.; and a sister, Freda Daughtry.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home, where the funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday.
Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery with military honors.
