WARREN -- Officials this morning said the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been called in to investigate the five-hour standoff at the Trumbull County Jail on Wednesday that involved three inmates taking a corrections officer hostage.
At a noon news conference today, Trumbull County Sheriff Tom Altiere said he expects BCI investigators to visit the jail on Friday and examine and collect evidence at the scene -- an isolation jail pod where inmates held corrections officer Joe Lynn at knifepoint.
The sheriff said it appears that the men used plastic silverware to make the weapon they held against Lynn's neck.
Altiere said Lynn was not hurt, but is on paid administrative leave and will be seeing a counselor per protocol.
The sheriff also said his office will confer with the county prosecutor to determine what criminal charges to levy against the inmates.
