NILES - John Fred Kelty, 88, of Niles, passed away Tuesday morning, April 22, 2014, at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren.
He was born Feb. 19, 1926, at the family home in Burghill, Trumbull County, the son of Tod Kelty Sr. of Youngstown and Anna Alice Campbell Kelty of New Castle, Pa.
John was a veteran of World War II and Korea, serving in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 and 1947 to 1950. He earned his GED while in the Navy and was a motion picture operator stationed at Philadelphia Naval Base.
John had a variety of jobs over the years among them working with Seifert Sound Service from 1943 to 1988 at Stambaugh Auditorium, and was a motion picture operator in 21 different local theatres. He retired from Stambaugh-Thompson Co. in 1988 after 32 years of service in the warehouse and as a truck driver.
He was a member of Teamsters Local 377.
His family lived in Austintown for more than 30 years and Mr. and Mrs. Kelty were members of the Western Reserve United Methodist Church in Canfield, where John ran the sound system. They lived for several years in Florida before returning to Ohio in 2005 to live near family.
John will be missed by his wife, Elanor Anne Liggett Kelty of Philadelphia, whom he married on July 16, 1949; one daughter, Mary Jane (Lawrence) Kelty Tripodi of Niles; two grandchildren, John Michael (Maggie) Tripodi of Bryan and Emily Tripodi of Boardman; one sister-in-law, Alice Goldinger of Alliance; five nieces, Beverly (William) Ratajak of Oregon, Joyce (James) Lackey of Alliance, Joan (Peter) Secola of Tampa, Fla., Barbara (Jim) Johnson of Warren and Jolynne Kelty of Akron; and several great-nieces and -nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Tod (Alice) Kelty Jr. and Boyd R. (Grace)Kelty; one sister, Eleanor (Joseph) Sokevitz; and two nephews, David Sokevitz and Thomas J. (Jolynne) Kelty.
There will be no funeral, calling hours or memorial service held for John and entombment will take place at Niles City Cemetery.
