YOUNGSTOWN - Robert O. Meikle, 87, died Wednesday morning, April 16, 2014, at Hospice House in Poland.
Mr. Meikle was born Jan. 3, 1927, in Fowler, the son of the late Thomas and Martha Guesman Meikle.
Robert was a 1945 graduate of Fowler High school, where he held the position as class president.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and spent one year of his service in Korea. He worked as a pipefitter for Local 225, and was highly regarded in his career.
He was a private pilot and enjoyed traveling out west, and camped with his family many times. He was a solid family man and great provider who held high morals and values. He was known as the rock of the family.
His passion was amateur radio, where he held the extra license, which was the highest license you could obtain. He was also a member of the 20/9 amateur radio club.
He enjoyed pranking family and friends and visiting the Landmark Restaurant in Youngstown every morning for breakfast.
He leaves behind his children, Sherri (Bill) Krull of Houston, Martha Meikle of Austintown and Jeanette (Ed) Damico of Austintown; his grandchildren, Deanna (Gordon) Hamilton of Houston, William (Jesse) Szczygiel of Youngstown, Michael (Karisa) Szczygiel of Germany, Shannon (Chris) Soles of Boardman, George (Jessica) Garland of Southington, Travis (Nichole) Snyder of England, Amy (John) Snyder of Oklahoma, and Lila Herdman; 16 great-grandchildren; his brother, Arnold (June) Meikle of Fowler; and son-in-law, Michael Herdman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife, Lila (Baker) Meikle, whom he married on Nov. 14, 1948; daughter, Deborah Meikle; son, Robert Meikle; and siblings, Thomas Meikle, Marjorie Carter, Margaruite Clark and Ardale Baker.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. April 25 at Fowler United Methodist Church, 3426 Youngstown Kingsville Road, Fowler.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House, 9803 Sharrot Road, Poland, OH 44514.
