WARREN - The number of new cars sold in the local three-county area increased 4.5 percent to 2,694 in March from 2,577 a year ago, and used car sales surged 8.5 percent to 4,638 from 4,276.
Locally, the Lordstown-built Chevrolet's Cruze remained the top-selling new automobile in the market, showing a massive sales increase of more than 70 percent to 298 in March from 173 a year ago.
Sales figures are according to the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio, outlining auto sales results in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties.
Dealers moving the highest number of new cars off the lot in March were Greenwood Chevrolet in Austintown with 202, down slightly from 205 the dealership sold in March 2013; Sweeney Chevrolet in Boardman, which reported a significant dip to 164 from 198 a year ago; and Sweeney Buick GMC, which sold 155, up from the 99 it sold in March 2013.
Top Trumbull County dealership was Greenwood in Hubbard, which sold 94, up 20 from 74 in March 2013; Sims Buick GMC Nissan, which sold 87, up from 76 a year ago; and Diane Sauer Chevrolet, which dipped to 82 from 94 a year ago.
Used car sales were topped by Greenwood in Austintown with 163; Taylor Kia with 106; and Stadium GM Superstore with 100. Sauer was tops for used car sales in Trumbull County with 86. Greenwood in Hubbard sold 80 used cars in March; and Cole Valley Motor sold 70.
Including Cruze, General Motors held the top five spots for local new car sales. Behind Cruze, were Chevy Equinox with 182; Chevy Malibu with 144; GMC Terrain with 133; and Chevy Silverado pickup truck with 101.
