Fire damages house, barn in Vernon
VERNON - It took firefighters from six departments about two hours to extinguish a barn fire here Sunday.
Officials said the blaze at 5147 Bushnell Campbell Road started shortly before noon, probably because of winds picking up flames from a legal fire pit that was outside the barn. Hay inside the barn caught fire. No person or animal were injured.
Departments from Burghill, Johnston, Orangeville, Hartford, Kinsman and West Salem in Pennsylvania fought the fire. It caused about $25,000 in damage to the barn and siding to a nearby house.
Southington to meet on board appointment
SOUTHINGTON - The Southington Board of Education will meet 7 p.m. Tuesday in executive session at the school media center to interview candidates for a vacant seat on the board and appoint a new member.
The seat is open because of the March 27 resignation of Albert Haberstroh, who had to step down because he was also serving as a member of the Trumbull County Education Service Center Governing Board.

VIENNA - The Vienna Neighborhood Watch will meet at 7 p.m. today at the township hall, 848 Youngstown Kingsville Road, with guest speaker, Danielle Procopio, community relations director for Southern Care Hospice
Procopio will speak about hospice and advanced directives.
Sheriff to crack down on prom season
YOUNGSTOWN - Mahoning County Sheriff's Office deputies are stepping up patrols durIng prom season weekends, Sheriff Jerry Greene said Saturday.
"If we catch you driving impaired, we will arrest you. No exceptions, no excuses," Greene said in a prepared statement.
The crackdown comes as part of a nationwide blitz to get impaired drivers off the roads.
