EDUCATION FORUM OFFERED: An education forum, "Accountability: Charter Schools and High Stakes Testing in Ohio," will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 28 at Union Baptist Church on Lincoln Avenue in Youngstown.
The following speakers and topics will be discussed: Doug Oblinger, Akron Beacon Journal, "What Journalists Can and Cannot Tell You About Charter Schools"; Sherry Tyson, assistant treasurer of Youngstown City Schools, "What Choice Costs Youngstown City Taxpayers"; Dr. Ronald J. Iarussi, superintendent of Mahoning County Educational Service Center, "Testing and Mandates in the New Age of Accountability"; Dr. Randy Hoover, professor emeritus at Youngstown State University, "The Reality of Student and School Academic Performance."
The panel will be moderated by the League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown.
LETSON INDUCTED: Benjamin Letson will be inducted into the Ohio Wesleyan University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa on May 10. Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary by five students to "embrace the principles of freedom of inquiry and liberty of thought and expression."
Only 10 percent of colleges and universities in the United States have chapters of Phi Beta Kappa and membership is offered to the top 10 percent of students in those schools.
On May 11, Letson will graduate from Ohio Wesleyan with honors degrees in mathematics and physics. He has accepted a fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Mathematics Department to pursue a PhD in neuro-mathematics.

CHAMPION OFFERS OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR NINTH GRADE: Champion School District is offering open enrollment for ninth grade for the 2014-15 school year. Open enrollment dates for picking up and returning completed applications has been extended. Applications will be available at the Champion Board of Education Office (top floor), 5759 Mahoning Ave. N.W., Warren, OH 44483; forms must be returned by 3:30 p.m. April 25.
Applications must be picked up and returned in person by a parent / guardian with the following information - birth certificate, shot record, preschool report, Social Security card, utility bill for proof of residence in a bordering district, and custody papers, if applicable.
Open enrollment applicants for Champion's kindergarten must also submit a completed kindergarten registration packet to the Central Elementary principal's office to receive an appointment for kindergarten screening on Tuesday and Wednesday.
