Tribune Chronicle Sports Editor Dana Sulonen and former staff reporter Matthew Peaslee took home state and national writing awards on Thursday.
During an awards luncheon in Columbus, Sulonen was awarded first place by The Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association for her feature story, "Part of the Team." The article was written about Champion's Natalie Morgan, who despite suffering cerebral palsy, was able to be a member of the Golden Flashes' bowling team. Sulonen took first out of 40 entries in Division I, which encompasses the highest circulated papers in the state.
Peaslee took home second place in the national Associated Press Sports Editors writing contest for his story, "Battling Back," which chronicled the struggle and recovery of Luke Holko, who was hit in the head with a foul ball at a Mahoning Valley Scrappers game nearly five years ago. Peaslee beat out 112 entries submitted in the under-30,000 circulation division.
