Thur., 12:46 pm: Kent shooting suspect on probation

April 3, 2014
Tribune Chronicle

KENT - Chief of Police John Peach, at a news conference today, announced that the man accused of firing a shot on the campus of Kent State University has been identified as Quavaugntay Tyler. The 24-year-old freshman was taken into custody at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna on Wednesday evening while being treated for a gunshot wound to the hand. He is being charged with a fourth degree felony, carrying a concealed weapon.

Police say Tyler is being cooperative and that the incident revolved around a domestic argument with two women. It was also noted that Tyler is on probation stemming from a theft charge in Brimfield.

Peach said Tyler allegedly gave the bloody gun and the ammunition to a woman student in Johnson residence hall. He offered no details on the woman, citing a continuing investigation.

Kent's campus was locked down for several hours Wednesday evening after a gunshot was reported outside Bowman Hall. Students were notified by text message and campus intercoms that they were to shelter in place. Police put out a call to all area law enforcement and hospitals to be on the lookout for a black male wearing dark-colored basketball shorts, possibly with a gunshot wound. Staff at Robinson notified police when a man matching the description came in for treatment of a gunshot wound to the left hand.

Tyler is set to be arraigned at 1:15 p.m. Friday and is in Portage County Jail.
