Sun., 11 pm: UPDATE 1: Shooting in Howland called in as accidental

HOWLAND A 23-year-old man was wounded Sunday night in what was initially reported as an accidental shooting near Howland Springs Elementary School.

Police were called about 9 p.m. to 1722 Stillwagon Road S.E. First reports were that the man had been shot in the shoulder, but minutes later, it was reported that he'd been hit below the heart. Police said he was conscious.

He was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. His condition was unavailable Sunday night.

Police noted that the circumstances around the shooting were unclear, and investigators were working on the case late Sunday. Additional information, including the type of gun and how the shooting occurred, was not released Sunday night.
