NILES - Donald Richard Bernard Sr., 76, passed away at 6:25 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Trumbull Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
He was born June 8, 1937, in Niles, the son of Anthony and Mary Pallante Bernard and lived most of his life in this community.
A graduate of Niles McKinley High School and Kent State University, he honorably served in the United States Army.
He retired as a small engine repair teacher at the Maplewood Joint Vocational School in Ravenna. He and his father were owners of Niles Lawn Mower, and in recent years, he was self-employed as a landscaper and snowplower.
He enjoyed hunting, boating and fishing, and most of all, he loved and cherished the time spent with his granddaughter.
Donald is survived by a son, Donald Richard (Hollie) Bernard Jr. of Niles; granddaughter, Zoie Bernard; and an aunt, Margaret Pallante of Niles.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Martha Bernard.
Calling Hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home. Service of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Rev. Thomas Kraszewski of St. Stephen Church will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery.
