St. Patrick's actual name is Maewyn Succat.
He was born in 387 AD in Britain not Ireland, the country where he is celebrated.
St. Patrick was held captive and made a slave in Ireland for six years before being let go.
Despite this, he was a Romano/British Christian missionary and bishop of Ireland, a very good one at that because he used some of the traditions of the Irish culture to convert the pagan Druids who inhabited the island at the time.
Because of his success, and it wasn't because he drove the snakes out of Ireland, according to history.com, he became the patron saint for Ireland.
We may never know why he became a bishop & missionary for Ireland but everyone of drinking age sure loves the holiday, even though they may not know who St. Patrick was.
Happy St. Patty's Day to You!
