LIBERTY - On Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, the Liberty High School Speech and Debate team hosted its annual invitational tournament. Led by head coach Amber Gallagher, the tournament boasted a roster of over 320 competitors, including 24 Liberty students. Speech and Debate is an extracurricular public speaking activity that offers participants the opportunity to compete for scores in front of their peers and adult judges. Categories include Student Congress, partnered or individual debate, theatrical interpretation, and oratory. In addition to speaking ability, several categories require students to develop other skill sets; for example, students in debate and Original Oratory author their own speeches, while extemporaneous speakers are given a mere half hour to develop an analytical argument before presenting a seven minute speech.
