CORTLAND - Charles Edward Rowland, 91, of Cortland, died at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Lake Vista in Cortland, with his family by his side.
He was born Aug. 13, 1922, in Fairmont, W.Va., the son of Clarence and Mae Ashby Rowland.
Charles was an honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed telling stories and showing pictures of his times while in the South Pacific and also while in Australia.
Mr. Rowland was retired from Packard Electric as a laborer.
He enjoyed camping, gardening and lawn work. He really enjoyed the last 10 years of his life, living at Lake Vista, walking the grounds.
He loved to travel around the country with his wife, the former Elizabeth H. Martin, whom he married on July 23, 1949; she preceded him in death on March 26, 2008. They also had an infant son who died in 1960.
Survivors include his children, Barbara S. (Sam) Frasco of Howland and Richard E. Rowland of Cortland.
Military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Shafer-Winans Chapel in Cortland, followed by the religious services, when the Rev. Michael Swierz will celebrate Charles' life.
Family and friends may visit from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Rowland will be laid to rest next to his wife in the Crown Hill Burial Park, Vienna.
