EASTLAKE - Leonard L. Smith, 87, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at his home in Eastlake with his family by his side.
He was a resident of Southington most of his life before moving to Conneaut and then to Eastlake.
Leonard was born Oct. 10, 1926, in Warren, to the late Francis and Dolly Miller Smith.
He was a 1944 graduate of Chalker High School in Southington; a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II; and a graduate of Kent State Police Academy.
Leonard worked at Thomas Steel for 43 years and retired at 64 years of age.
He also worked as a deputy sheriff at the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office and captain of the sheriff's department's mounted unit for 10 years.
He lived, owned and operated Gold Nugget Farms in Southington until he retired and moved to Lake Erie.
Leonard was an avid sportsman - fishing and hunting were his passions.
He is survived by his wife of 68 1/2 years, Wilma Elston Smith; his daughter, Linda (Ted) Vannelli of Kirtland; his granddaughters, Shugie Stoneman of West Farmington and Tina Zai of Shaker Heights; grandson, Mario Vannelli of Orwell; great-grandchildren, Kylie Stoneman, Colton Stoneman, Zeki Zai, Aria Zai, Zara Zai, Adam Vannelli and Ella Vannelli; sister, Betty Hurd of Cortland; and 13 nieces and nephews.
Leonard was preceded in death by his sister, Lafon Smith Dawson; and his three brothers, Alton, Adelbert and Lee.
