CORTLAND - Blanche Fickes Marcello, 72, of Cortland, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren after a seven-year battle with lung cancer.
We all admired her for her strong faith, strength, courage and unselfishness.
She was born on May 1, 1941, in Howland, the daughter of the late Vere and Blanche Barnard Fickes.
Blanche was a 1959 graduate of Howland High School and worked at GE Ohio Lamp in Warren from 1957-1967. She loved to bowl, crochet, and sew, and she loved butterflies. Her greatest accomplishment was being a homemaker and taking care of her family.
Survivors include her husband, Sam Marcello; her daughter, Stacey (Douglas) Hillier of Cortland; her two grandchildren, Brett (Brittany Sackett) Hillier, and Meranda Hillier; and one great-grandson, Logan Hillier. Also surviving are her siblings, Larry (Joyce) Fickes of Niles, Bill (Betty) Fickes of Warren, and Judy (Jim) Griffith of Bristolville.
Other than her parents, Blanche was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Pavick, and her brother, Ronnie Fickes.
Blanche and her family are so grateful to the Hope Center and their loving staff who made Blanche feel like family. Also, we would like to express are sincere thanks for all those who prayed faithfully for her throughout the years.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Shafer-Winans Chapel in Cortland, where Pastor Joel Dickson will celebrate Blanche's life.
Family and friends may visit at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley in her memory.
