ASHTABULA - One person was killed and two others injured in a shooting Monday in the Ashtabula harbor area.
The shooters remained at large Monday night following the 1:50 p.m. gunshots at 2106 Norman Ave., near St. Joseph's Cemetery.
City police are looking for two gunmen described by police as black males wearing masks and dressed in dark clothing. The men reportedly opened fire inside the residence, shooting to death Alexis Xavier Mook-Colon, 20, according to Richard Mongell, chief investigator for the Ashtabula County Coroner's Office.
Mook-Colon was pronounced dead at the scene, Mongell said.
"He was shot multiple times," he said.
The victim's mother, Lydia Aviles, 43, also suffered gunshot wounds, as well as the victim's younger brother, Benny Alexander Mook-Colon, Mongell said.
Anyone with information on the shooting or the whereabouts of the shooters is asked to contact the Ashtabula Police Department at 440-992-7172.
Aviles and Benny Mook-Colon were transported by ambulance to Ashtabula County Medical Center and then taken by ambulance to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Mongell said. A medical helicopter was called to transport them, but severe winter weather prohibited the helicopter from flying, he said.
Officers quickly descended on the neighborhood, Ashtabula police Chief Robert Stell said. Officers fanned out, searching for the shooters.
Classes had been canceled Monday at nearby Kent State University at Ashtabula, but employees were there, and when the campus heard of the shooting, it went into lock-down mode - nobody in, nobody out, employees said. When the offices closed, staff members were escorted to their cars.
On local radio stations, authorities warned residents to stay inside and lock the doors.
City Solicitor Michael Franklin said a search warrant was executed a short time later at the crime scene.
The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation was on the scene Monday evening.
