LISBON - A Salem man accused of stabbing his mother several times during an alleged attack in her home last week was arraigned Thursday morning in Columbiana County Municipal Court.

Wearing a sling around his neck and with bandages on his arm, Derek D. Ball, 24, last known address Home Circle, Salem, appeared before Judge Carol Robb by video from the county jail.

According to police, Ball allegedly stabbed Josee R. Wilson, 43, also of Home Circle, Salem, several times on Jan. 12. Court documents state the attack left Wilson with several cuts and stab wounds around her head and upper torso. Besides assaulting her with the knife, Wilson reportedly told police Ball threatened to kill her during the attack.

Derek Ball, 24, keeps his head down while being escorted into Salem Police headquarters by Ptl. Mike Garber Wednesday afternoon. Det. Brad Davis and Garber took Ball into custody immediately after his release from St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he’s been a patient since Jan. 12 when he allegedly stabbed and injured his mother, Josee Wilson, at her Home Circle residence and cut himself on the wrists. He was charged with felonious assault, a second-degree felony.

Ball was found by police with two self-inflicted wounds to both wrists. He was hiding behind a neighbor's home and located about an hour after police arrived to assist Wilson. He was hospitalized first at Salem Regional Medical Center and then taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he remained until he was released into police custody on Wednesday.

Facing up to eight years in prison and a $15,000 fine, Ball was granted a court-appointed attorney. He explained to Robb he has no income and had recently left the military.

Bond was set at $250,000 cash or surety and Robb explained he is to have no contact with his mother, a bond condition which includes no contact by mail, Facebook, Twitter and phone calls.

A preliminary hearing set on Monday in Columbiana County Municipal Court.
