YSU to offer scholarship for incoming freshmen
A new scholarship will provide $1,000 for incoming freshmen at Youngstown State University.
The First Opportunity Award will be granted to prospective freshmen with at least a 3.0 high school grade-point average and score of 20 on the ACT or 900 on the SAT exam. It will be available starting this fall semester.
As many as 200 to 300 students could meet requirements for eligibility, YSU officials expect. The scholarship is funded by the university and YSU Foundation.
McDonald BOE to vote on employee contract
McDONALD - In a special meeting today, the McDonald Board of Education will vote on a new contract with the Ohio Association of Public School Employees.
If approved, the three-year pact would be retroactive to Sept. 1, 2013, and run through Aug. 31, 2016.
The meeting will be held 7 p.m. today in the high school library.
Lordstown board to meet on personnel
LORDSTOWN - The Lordstown Board of Education will discuss personnel and negotiations today during a special meeting.
The board will meet at 6 p.m. and go into executive session. Some action may be taken.
Ice fishing tournament plans on trying again
MECCA - After two ice-less years, the fifth annual IceFishOhio Mosquito Lake Panfish Tournament is set for Feb. 2.
Up to 75 teams will compete to see who can catch the most panfish from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Check-in at Causeway Sporting Goods will take place from 6 to 7:30 a.m., with the final weigh-in held at 3:10 p.m.
Those wishing to enter can download an application from the Mosquito Lake forum page on IceFishOhio.com or contact Dave Hoheisel at 614-361-5548. Completed forms can be turned in to Causeway Sporting Goods.
The tournament fee will be $75 with a $10 late fee for those registering on the day of the event. If entering at Causeway Sporting Goods, teams must pay in cash.
The Trumbull County Tourism Bureau and Causeway Sporting Goods will be partnering with IceFishOhio.com to present the ice fishing tournament.
Bazetta, Cortland crews battle chimney fire
BAZETTA - Fire crews from Bazetta and Cortland were called out at 10:10 p.m. Monday to a chimney fire at 2790 Niles Cortland Road N.E.
A Bazetta fire department spokesman said it was a very minor fire contained to the chimney in the detached garage and was put out quickly.
The call originally came in as a fire to the garage, which was not damaged.
Crews were back to the station within a half hour of the call.
Hubbard man robbed after responding to ad
AKRON - A 41-year-old man from Hubbard was robbed of $200 after he responded to an ad on Craigslist, according to Akron police.
Around 11:30 a.m. Friday, the victim said he met the supposed seller in a parking lot on East South Street in Akron to buy some gold jewelry. When he arrived, the seller pulled a handgun, took $200 and ran, he told police.
Zachary L. Christopher, 31, of Brown Street, was arrested in the robbery. Police said a search of Christopher's home turned up a 9 mm handgun, syringes, rolling papers, a burnt spoon, plastic bags and razors.
He was charged with aggravated robbery, weapons under disability, possession of drug abuse instruments and possession of drug paraphernalia.
His roommate, Ron B. Hopkins, 30, was charged with having a working meth lab inside of the home. He faces other charges, as well, according to Tribune Chronicle news partner WYTV 33 News.
