Weathersfield Township officials are planning to bring back the summer festival this summer for the purpose of bringing the community together.
"Our hope is to recreate a lot of what was done in the past," said Weathersfield assistant fire chief, Ken Boring. "But this time we plan to have only community organizations serving food products."
According to township officials, Weathersfield was the scene of a three-day festival each summer that included rides and food vendors. The last festival was held sometime in the late 1980s, said township administrator Dave Rouan. The event was held on the lawn and side parking lot of Mineral Ridge Middle School.
"Late last year we started getting requests from folks who wanted to reinstitute the Weathersfield festival," Rouan said.
Acting on those requests, a committee was formed to look into bringing the festival back to the township. Committee members, consisting of Rouan, township trustees, officials from the fire departments, interested residents, business owners and church representatives, met to discuss the possibility of organizing a festival to be held in June at the middle school property.
"We would like to start out small, mainly due to time limitations, but want to hold an event that will kick it off," Rouan said.
According to Rouan, this year's kick-off event will pave the way for a full-blown festival with rides, games and entertainment in subsequent years.
"Planning something like this takes a lot of volunteer hours and a lot of folks have to be involved," he said.
Stressing that the festival is not limited to Mineral Ridge but will include all of Weathersfield Township, Rouan said the plan is to make the event a fundraising experience for local churches and organizations. The current plan is to make the event all community oriented, Rouan said, as well as to bring the community together.
The next meeting of the festival committee will be held at 6 p.m. today at the administration building. Anyone interested in volunteering or providing ideas and planning for the event is invited to attend the meeting, or contact the township administration building at 330-652-6326 or the fire department at 330-652-5347.
