WARREN - Local new automobile sales closed out the year with a 16 percent increase over the sales of 2012, with 27,628 autos sold in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties, according to statistics released Monday by the Auto Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio.
December sales rebounded nicely after a drop in November, with new car buyers taking delivery on 1,928 cars last month, up from 1,607 in December 2012.
Austintown's Greenwood Chevrolet closed out the year as the top new car seller in the tri-county market for both December and the year.
The dealership sold 155 new cars, up from just 75 in December 2012.
For the year, the dealership ranked first at 1,901 new cars.
The next closest dealer was Sweeney Chevrolet, also in Mahoning County, which sold 1,532 new cars.
For the month of December, Austintown's Bob & Chuck Eddy Chrysler Dodge Jeep sold 96 new vehicles; Sweeney sold 94; Stadium GM Superstore sold 87 and Taylor Kia sold 79.
A total of 6,806 new cars were sold in Trumbull County throughout 2013, up 16 percent from the previous year.
For the month, Sims Buick GMC Nissan held the top sales spot in the county at 64. Klaben Ford Lincoln of Warren ranked second at 62 and Diane Sauer Chevrolet sold 59.
All three dealerships showed an increase in sales over December 2012.
Sauer Chevrolet outsold all its Trumbull County competitors to claim top spot for the year, moving 920 new cars off the lot, up 21 percent from the previous year.
Klaben held second place with 826, followed closely by Sims with 823. All three showed double-digit percentage increases over 2012.
Used cars also sold well last year.
In Trumbull County alone, 9,894 new cars were sold, up 8 percent over 9,195 sold in 2012.
The locally made Chevy Cruze finished as the top-selling model in the local market for both the month and the year.
The month showed a 217 percent increase to 165. For the year, 1,744 new car buyers took delivery of a Chevy Cruze, up 34 percent from the 1,301 in 2012.
Ranking being the Cruze as top-selling local models in December were the Chevy Equinox (109), Chevy Malibu (94), Ford F-150 (75) and Chevy Silverado (67).
