BROOKFIELD - John A. Joanou, 87, of Brookfield, passed away Sunday evening, Jan. 12, 2014, in the Sharon Regional Health System following a period of declining health.
He was born on July 8, 1926, in Rhodes, Greece, the son of Alex and Olga Nicholaou Joanou.
John came to the United States when he was 5 months old and was a 1944 graduate of Farrell High School.
Following his graduation, he became a licensed projectionist and had managed several local movie theaters and drive-ins. In 1948, he began working at the former Sharon Steel Corp. where he would work for more than 37 years before his retirement in 1986 as a master machinist.
Mr. Joanou was a member of the Hebron Lodge 389 of the Free and Accepted Masons in West Middlesex, Pa., a former officer of the GAPA in Farrell, Pa. He had also served on the safety committee as well as served as shop steward while at the mill.
During his free time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and taking care of his family and home.
John leaves behind his devoted wife of more than 60 years, whom he married on June 6, 1953, the former Eva Faklis; his daughter, Lori Jean (Sam) Chirakos; granddaughters, Alexandra E. Chirakos and Anastasia E. Chirakos, all of Dublin, Ohio; his brother, Marko (Fannie) Joanow of Hermitage, Pa.; sister-in-law, Sylvia Joanow of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Manuel Joanow.
Calling hours for friends and family will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Madasz Chapel of Lane Family Funeral Homes, 6923 Warren Sharon Road, Brookfield. A memorial service will begin at 6:45 p.m.
The Rev. Andrew Gall will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 389 Clark St., Sharon, Pa. 16146.
Burial will take place in Archangel Michael Cemetery in Campbell.
Donations may be made in John's memory to either St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Sharon or to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Warren.
