HOWLAND - Robert Earl Nelson, 82, passed away at 10:22 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at Vibra Hospital of Mahoning Valley, Trumbull Campus following an extended illness.
He was born June 15, 1931, in Niles, the son of Earl A. and Anna R. Morris Nelson, and lived in this community most of his life.
A 1949 graduate of Howland High School, he attended Ohio University.
Bob retired in 1990 from American Welding and Manufacturing after working 40 years as the director of purchasing.
He attended the Howland Community Church and enjoyed vacationing in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. He played baseball and basketball and was a fan of The Ohio State University and the Cleveland Indians.
An avid golfer, Bob was a starter at Avalon Lakes Country Club, enjoyed playing at Oak Tree C.C. and with his league at Tamer Win. Most of all, he cherished the time spent at family gatherings especially during the holidays.
Bob is survived by his wife Ruth E. (Becker) Nelson whom he married Feb. 19, 1955; son, Jeff Nelson of Louisville, Ky.; daughter, Cindy (Bill) Walker of Columbus; two grandchildren, Matthew Walker, Erin Walker; sister, Sally Nelson and her special friend Emily Mercer of Storrs, Conn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Patricia Williams.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home, where the funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Brian Byrne will officiate.
Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
