At the Ohio State University Extension, we are busy putting the final touches on the myriad of programs we will offer for our farmers this upcoming winter. Our winter newsletter, which will be released within the next few weeks, will provide more details on these programs. A reminder: We are now taking applications for our 2014 Master Gardener training program. So if you have a strong interest in gardening and enjoy helping others, you are invited to apply. To become an OSU Extension Master Gardener volunteer, you must attend ten training sessions held from February to May. Course topics include history of OSU Extension, plant physiology, soils, composting, fertilizers, herbs, house plants, plant propagation, plant pathology, diagnostics, entomology, integrated pest management, vegetables, lawns, woody ornamentals, fruits, landscape maintenance and making effective presentations.
This class will be taught at the Trumbull County Ag Center, 520 W. Main St. in Cortland. All courses will be taught from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is a course fee that covers course materials, refreshments and speaker travel costs.
Upon the completion of the training program, each volunteer is asked to volunteer 50 hours of horticultural service to the community through extension educational programming. Such services could include teaching youths and adults about gardening, planting and maintaining extension demonstration gardens, answering gardening questions from the public, judging flower and vegetable projects at local fairs and assisting community garden participants.

Forages supply a significant part of the feed in most dairy and other ruminant animal operations in Ohio. OSU Extension in Ashtabula County will be a host site for the OSU Extension Forage Production School on Jan. 30.
This forage production school is being offered by the Ohio State University Extension Dairy Working. The course is geared toward both forage and livestock producers. Emphasis will be on forages for dairy users, but beef and sheep users will also benefit from the course.
Attend this workshop to discover new, innovative ways of looking at forage production and what might work for you. Learn how to maximize profit per acre in Ohio's crazy variable weather. OSU researchers and OSU extension specialists and educators will present cutting edge information on what is new in forage production with live interaction between all program sites.
Topic areas to be covered: What's new in forage genetics; Small grains and double cropping; Fertility and manure utilization; What's new in weed control; and What's new in agronomic products / additives.
