WARREN - The percentage of eligible workers unemployed locally increased at least a half percentage point in September and October when compared to similar statistics from a year ago, according to Ohio Labor Market Information released Tuesday.
Jobless numbers for the Trumbull and Mahoning County area were reported at 7.8 percent, a half point higher than October 2012, but down slightly from September's local unemployment rate of 7.9 percent.
Statewide, the October unemployment rate was 7.5 percent, 7.4 percent in September and 7.3 percent in August, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
The numbers reflect the percentage of the civilian labor force that is unemployed. The numbers released Tuesday indicate that the size of the civilian workforce in Trumbull and Mahoning County dropped 1,200 to 210,400 from 211,600 a year ago.
It is the first time labor market data has been released since August. The delays were triggered by the 16-day partial federal government shutdown in October which affected operations in the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Countywide statistics show 7.6 percent October unemployment rate in Trumbull County, down from 7.9 percent reported both last month and a year ago, October 2012. Mahoning County statistics were listed at 7.9 percent for last month, an increase of nearly a full point from the 6.7 percent reported in October of 2012, but down slightly from last month's 8 percent jobless rate.
On the municipal level, 8.2 percent of workers were jobless in Warren, down a full point from 9.2 percent a year ago and down a half-point from September's 8.7 percent. The highest substate unemployment rate for the local area is reported in Youngstown, at 9.8 percent. That's up from 8.7 percent in October 2012, but still considerably lower than September's brief jump back to double-digits of 10.2 percent.
The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in October was 427,000, up 2,000 from 425,000 in September. The number of unemployed has increased by 31,000 in the past 12 months from 396,000. The October unemployment rate for Ohio was up from 6.9 percent in October 2012.
The U.S. unemployment rate for October was 7.3 percent, up from 7.2 percent in September and down from 7.9 percent in October 2012.
