victim is Niles man
YOUNGSTOWN - City police have identified the body of man discovered lying in a driveway on the city's South Side.
Police said a girl walking by discovered David Perkins, 23, of Niles, at 266 Hilton Ave. around 9:20 a.m. He had been shot once in the back, investigators reported.
They said they are still trying to determine what Perkins was doing in the area and if he was shot there or somewhere else.
Man killed by car
while raking leaves
YOUNGSTOWN - A man raking his leaves on Glenwood Avenue in Youngstown was killed in a traffic accident about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
The driver of a van jumped the curb, drove into the yard and hit the man. The van clipped a telephone pole before spinning back into the middle of Glenwood Avenue.
A neighbor told Tribune Chronicle news partner WYTV 33 News that the man was killed instantly.
WYTV identified the victim as Earl Douthitt, 61, of 1720 Glenwood Ave.
Crews work to contain
oil spill in Southington
SOUTHINGTON - Emergency crews were called out about 2:20 p.m. Tuesday after about 2 gallons of crude oil spilled at 5290 state Route 305.
Cleanup crews anticipated little problem with cleanup.
Initial reports indicated the leak occurred in a stretch of pipe that is buried on the 1,000-acre property, according to Tribune Chronicle news partner WYTV 33 News.
Cirque du Soleil
returns to Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN - Cirque du Soleil's "Varekai" is coming to the Covelli Centre for seven performances in 2014.
According to the Cirque website, the word Varekai means "wherever" in the Romany language of the gypsies the universal wanderers. The production pays tribute to the nomadic soul, to the spirit and art of the circus tradition and to the infinite passion of those whose quest takes them along the path that leads to Varekai. Cirque's ''Dralion'' played the venue in 2010.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12 -14; 4 and 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15; and 1:30 and 5 p.m. Feb. 16.
Tickets range from $35 to $145 and go on sale to Cirque Club members at 10 a.m. today through Ticketmaster. Tickets will go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Nov. 8.
Early voting hours
set Friday, Saturday
WARREN - The Trumbull County Board of Elections will have extended hours Friday and Saturday for early, in-person voting for the Tuesday general election.
The board, 2947 Youngstown Road S.E., will be open until 6 p.m. Friday and from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Voters can cast a ballot early on Monday, too, during the board's regular hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Voters need to bring ID.
There will be no walk-in voting at the board on Tuesday, Election Day. ''That's when they have to go to their polling place,'' said director Kelly Pallante.
The elections board in Mahoning County will be open the same hours Friday and Saturday to accommodate early voters.
