BRIGHTWOOD, Va. - John Simons (ham radio No. AB8GX), 68, of Brightwood, Va., left this life on Monday, Oct. 14, 2013 to go on his final journey. He fought bravely after a simple procedure went wrong.
He was born May 25, 1945 in Buckhannon, W.Va., the son of Glen and Martha Lewis Simons.
He leaves his wife of 48 years, Ada. They have four daughters, Jennifer Balas (Andy) of St. Louis, Julie Lowery (Jimmy) and Jo Ellen Reeves (Duane) of Warren, and Jeanie Jenkins (Dave) of Brightwood, Va., with whom they lived.
John dearly loved his six grandchildren, Mark Bryant, Erin Mortimore, Kellie McAllister, Jessica Reel, Zachary Reeves and Allie Jenkins. He treasured his two great-grandchildren, Tayler Mortimore and Emanuel McAllister. John leaves behind his dear stepfather, Stanley Lewis; brothers, Joe and Bill Lewis; sister Darlene Sweetman; also John Fegley who he loved like a brother.
Preceding him in death were Martha Lewis, his mother, and father, Glen Simons and brothers, Timmy and Ron Lewis.
John worked for Trumbull County Children Services and Trumbull Metropolitan Housing Authority of Warren. Retirement was too boring for John, so he drove trucks for Better Living Components of Charlottesville, Va., the last two years.
There will be no funeral.
There will be a celebration of life from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 26, 2013, at Grace Baptist Church, Mahoning Ave., Warren. Bring a dish to pass. We will eat, laugh, fellowship and cry together. Family, friends, ham radio buddies, Chihuahua friends, those who worked with him and all who knew and loved John are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, a gift in John's name to "Save the Children" or "St. Jude Children's Hospital would be appreciated.
Arrangements were handled by the Preddy Funeral Home, Madison, Va.
