GIRLS TENNIS: CANTON - A couple of area Division I girls doubles teams advanced to the fourth round of Tuesday's tennis sectionals.
Howland's team of Marissa Jocola and Michelle Lussier won two matches to set up a date with third-seeded Canfield (Hannah Cianciola and Ashley Kaleel) today. The Cardinals pair didn't drop a game in either of their two matches.
The winners of the fourth-round matches advance to Saturday's semfinals and finals in Canton, to play for seeding at next week's district at Oberlin College.
Austintown Fitch's Ashley Hanuschak and Katie Klepec will face fourth-seeded Maria Thomas and Emma Schoeppner of Jackson.
Then, Canfield's Tayael-Hayek and Brianna Slemons face top-seed Hoover (Nicholette and Natalie Bourlas). The Bourlas sisters have yet to lose a game through two matches.
CROSS COUNTRY: McDONALD - McDonald girls edged out South Range for the Inter Tri-County League Cross Country Championship at Woodland Park, 33-35.
United's Allison Parks, and the duo of South Range's Mollie Pierson and Matti Dunham took the top three, but McDonald's trio Heidi Hoffman, Hannah Lovejoy and Rachel Perry led the McDonald charge in places four through six.
McDonald's boys distanced itself from second-place United, 27-73.
McDonald's Bobby Johnson beat Mineral Ridge's Logan Smith for the individual title, while United's James Kataro took third.
BOYS GOLF: Area golfers came up short in their attempts to reach the Division II state golf tournament.
Lakeview finished 12th with a team score of 361 on Tuesday at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna, and LaBrae's Gerry Booze was the highest placing individual (out of local players) with a 90, good for ninth place. The top three teams and top three individuals not on qualifying teams moved on to next weekend's state tournament at the Ohio State University's Scarlet Course.
Champion's Jared Gould hit a 106.
Canton Central Catholic finished first with a score of 307. Notre Dame Cathedral Latin and Gilmour Academy tied for second at 320.
Michael Walter of Woodridge was the medalist with a 69. Rob Scholl of Holy Name finished second by carding a 73, and Daniel Jones took third with a 74.
FOOTBALL TICKETS: The John F. Kennedy athletic office will be selling tickets for Saturday's game versus Villa Angela-St. Joseph to be played at Euclid Stadium.
Tickets are on sale each day in the office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets at JFK?are $5. At the gate, tickets are $7.
