RAVENNA - Lakeview boys golf coach Steve Woofter is happy to admit that he's proud, impressed and even a bit shocked at his team's first-place finish in Monday's Division II sectional tournament at Windmill Lakes.
"I didn't expect this; it's surprising," he said. "You figure with these top teams like Girard and Mooney here, you just want to shoot well enough to get through. I'm very proud of my guys."
The Bulldogs shot a 320 for first place, five lower than second-place Southeast. Buster Thomas shot a 75 to lead Lakeview, while Dave Lemasters and Matt Fye each had an 81. Those three and Eric Rohrbaugh each shot in the 30s on the back nine.

Gerry Booze, left, of LaBrae chips his ball from the fairway on the first hole Monday at Windmill Lakes Golf Course in Ravenna. Liberty’s Bobby Stanovcak, right, waits to take his shot. Booze finished with a 77, qualifying him for the district tournament.
"It was great to see a lot of red numbers," said Woofter, who is in his third year coaching the Bulldogs.
The fifth man on Monday, Brandon Reed, was within striking distance, shooting an 85. Fye has been in the back of the pack for the first half of the season, but Woofter enjoys his play as of late.
"He kind of snuck in as our normal fifth guy," Woofter said. "He played the majority of the matches, but he didn't score all the time. He's been playing great lately."
Cardinal Mooney placed third as a team with 331 strokes, led by sophomore Nick Braydich who shot an 80. Girard was fourth with a team score of 343.
"They told us at the last minute that there'd only be three teams moving on," Woofter said. "It was quite a surprise and we were all tense from the beginning.
"It comes from the state, so that's how it is and you can't argue with what they say."
Champion's Jared Gould and LaBrae's Gerry Booze will each advance to next week's district tournament with scores of 75 and 77, respectively. It also will be held at Windmill Lakes, which is located in Ravenna.
"That's going to help us all out a lot," Woofter said. "Some of my guys have played there in tournaments in the past and we'll have the chance to do some practice rounds before the next tournament."
Senior Cody Tuttle shot a 74 to lead Southeast. Ben Wright and Joey Kainrad shot 80 and 82, respectively, for the Pirates. Jimmy Standohar led Girard with an 80, while Evan Standohar had an 81 and Mark Standohar shot 85.
