LEAVITTSBURG - Gary L. Smith, 60, was surrounded by loving family and pastoral care Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, as he peacefully departed for his eternal home following a brief illness. He is now home in heaven.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and son of Thomas Smith and Betty Sutton Smith. He was born Nov. 29, 1952.
A 1971 graduate of LaBrae High School, Mr. Smith had retired from General Motors, Delphi Division (Packard Electric), where he provided quality control and instructional support to other operators. Gary reluctantly retired after more than 30 years of service.
Gary loved people, work and movies. One of his favorite pastimes was impersonating movie stars or singers. He loved to make people laugh and was generous to a fault.
A spiritual man with deep faith in God, Gary attended church services when able. He planned to travel to see Europe and the Shroud of Turin. He was a member of Moose Lodge, Chapter 186
Gary is survived by his mother, Betty Sutton Smith of Leavittsburg, to whom he was a constant companion and caregiver after he retired from Delphi more than seven years ago; his brother, Clyde (Linda) Smith of Jupiter, Fla.; and sister, Faye (Andy) Reznick of Millersville, Md. Additionally, Gary leaves nephews Thomas W. (Cheryl) Smith II of Apopka, Fla., and Randy (Stacie) Stelk of Howland; and nieces Shannon Smith of Tallahassee, Fla., and Ardina (Ken) Pawloski of Warren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Smith.
"Gary's brief time on Earth made it a better place. Come home, good and faithful servant. Supper's waiting at the Father's table."
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at the Crown Hill Burial Park's Chapel, Vienna. There will be no calling hours.
Selby Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
