NILES - Cora R. Rounds, 99, passed away at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at the Autumn Hills Nursing Home.
She was born on Jan. 5, 1914, in Warren, the daughter of Pete and Julia Liberatore Scarnecchia and lived in this community her entire life.
A 1932 graduate of Niles High School, she was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Niles Senior SCOPE Center and was an avid Notre Dame Irish football fan.
She retired as the head cashier of the Woolworth 5 & 10 store in downtown Niles after working there for 13 years.
She was a wonderful baker and enjoyed cooking, dancing and especially cherished the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Cora is survived by a daughter, Elaine (Carmen) Palumbo; two grandsons, Michael (Kim) Palumbo and Rich (Stephanie) Palumbo; and four great-grandchildren, Miranda Timko, Anthony Palumbo, Lexie Palumbo and Nicholas Palumbo, all of Niles.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank H. Rounds, whom she married on Sept. 30, 1943, and who died on July 8, 1993; and a brother, Edward Anthony Scarnecchia.
A Service of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home, where family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Thomas Kraszewski will officiate.
Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
