Contest showcases local foods
A Youngstown woman won the first Farm-Fresh Cook-Off Challenge present by White House Fruit Farm in Canfield. Dawn Cunningham won the contest with her Avocado Almond Shortbread with Tomato & Peach Curd. Michelle Dubas of Youngstown placed second with her Peach Melba Ricotta Cake with Berry Coulis, and third prize went to Lori Dunaway of Canfield for her Almond Avocado Cupcakes with Almond Buttercream Frosting. There were 39 entrants in the cooking competitions, which required participants to incorporate five farm-fresh White House ingredients into their dishes at an event on Aug. 10. A portion of the proceeds benefited Second Harvest Food Bank.
Rust Belt hosts book sale
Rust Belt Theater Company will host a book sale Saturday at the Calvin Center, 755 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, as a fundraiser for the RBTC Studio for Young Actors. "Chris Yambar's Bookapalooza" will feature hundreds of books from local artist Chris Yambar's permanent collection as well as comedy and jazz recordings, comic books and original art. The sale runs from noon to 5 p.m. with a portion of the sales going to the student theater company.
Youth chorus seeks new members
The Salem Youth Chorus is looking for singers for its 2013-14 season. The chorus, under the direction of Jon Simsic, is open to singers 14 through college-age who love to sing and enjoy a challenging but supportive environment. Since it started in 2007, the chorus has released four CDs and performed in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Rehearsals are once a week in Boardman and Salem.
