Glitzy ‘Gatsby’ lacks novel’s gifts

"The Great Gatsby" - Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel pops visually, using 3D technology in a distinctive, imaginative way. The costumes and production design capture the glitz and glamour of the Roaring '20s, and the music (a mashup of hip hop, pop, jazz and blues) fits the mood of the movie no matter how anachronistic it may be. But that's also the problem with the movie. Luhrmann takes what many consider the greatest novel of the 20th century and turns it into a movie where the production design and the music are the only things that make an impact. The director clearly loves the book but struggles to find ways to dramatize some of its themes. Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton star. Bonus features include deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes videos shot by Maguire and featurettes on the source material and the fashion, music and culture of the Roaring '20s. (Warner Home Video, $28.98 DVD, $35.99 Blu-ray/DVD combo, $44.95 3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray/DVD combo)
