CORTLAND - Clifford Nippell Jr., 86, of Cortland, passed away at his home Thursday morning, Aug. 22, 2013.
He was born June 26, 1927, in Leavittsburg, a son of the late Oliver C. Nippell Sr. and Bessie Donnette Nippell.
Clifford was a 1945 graduate of Leavittsburg High School. He then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He worked for LTV Steel as a millwright for more than 45 years, retiring in 1992.
Clifford was a member for more than 50 years of Carroll F. Clapp Masonic Lodge 655 in Warren and Opal Chapter 181 of the Order of the Eastern Star, formerly West Farmington Eastern Star Chapter.
Clifford enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching football.
Clifford married his wife, Marie Carter Nippell, on Oct. 1, 1946, and they shared nearly 56 years together and raised two daughters. Marie preceded him in death in 2002.
He is survived by his two daughters, Deborah (Carl) Rider of Cortland and Sharyn (Kenneth) Wagner of Cortland; one sister, Virginia (Kenneth) Peace of Stow; four grandchildren, David (Lynn) Rider, Kelly (John) Phillips, Jennifer (Tim) Stuart and Jessica (Tim) Licata; seven great-grandchildren and one expected in early September. He also leaves his close friend, Vesta Edwards.
Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Vera Bean and Eva Lee Morton; and one brother, Richard Nippell.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel, in Warren. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Masonic services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Burial will be in Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna.
